We sure do get a lot of useful information using the internet, but one of its downsides is…it is full of fake things and misinformation made by those people who want to gain attention and of course money. That was the case when a photo of an Asian man eating a ‘fetus’ spread like wildfire over the internet. What is the truth behind this photo? Is it true or just another hoax?

In the early months of 2001, rumors of cannibalism began to circulate widely online, typically accompanied by graphic images of a Chinese man eating what appeared to be a cooked aborted baby served at a restaurant.

The picture is commonly described with a message saying:

What u are going to witness here is a fact, don’t get scared !” It’s China’s/Taiwan’s hottest food…” In China/Taiwan, dead babies or fetuses could be bought at $50 to $70 from hospitals to meet the high demand for grilled and barbecued babies…What a sad state of affairs!!

Recipients were encouraged to forward the mail attached with the disgusting photos.

But this rumor of cannibalism sparked even more in mid-March of 2001, when Warta Perdana a small Malaysian tabloid reported that a certain Taiwanese restaurant was serving a dish consisting of the baked flesh of human fetuses.

The growing international controversy began to achieve a modicum of legitimacy which later gained the attention of law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, CIA and Scotland Yard to investigate the matter. Trying to figure out who the man is and when and where the offending photos were taken, the origins of the images were quickly uncovered.

Apparently, the photos were only part of a performance entitled “Eating People” by artist Zhu Yu at the Shanghai arts festival in 2000.

However, the origin of the cannibalistic photo was also controversial as Zhu Yu made his piece of art to portray that humans can eat humans.

“I herewith announce my intention and my aim to eat people as a protest against mankind’s moral idea that he/she cannot eat people.” he said.

“No religion forbids cannibalism. Nor can I find any law which prevents us from eating people. I took advantage of the space between morality and the law and based my work on it” Zhu stated in response to the public reactions.

Mr. Yu also claimed in interviews that he used real aborted fetuses stolen from a medical school to create the piece and that he actually cooked and ate the fetuses for art’s sake.

He also admitted that the meat obtained from the bodies tasted bad, and said he had vomited several times while eating it.

Unknowingly, the images from the Zhu’s piece became viral and have been used in Anti-Chinese propaganda, intended to spread rumors among the ignorant online users.

To make it more believable other images circulated online showing a Chinese fetus soup. But this is just another plain hoax, it was actually a part of an art exhibit to protest cannibalism.

It is said that Zhu Yu later admitted that those are all fake. Should we take his words? It’s for you to decide.
