A German Sheppard dog named Tommy was abandoned in a wasteland five years ago by his previous owner in San Donaci, Italy.
Fortunately, 57-years-old woman named Maria Margherita Lochi who lived nearby and found the dog and decided to adopt him.
Tommy’s life drastically changed as the woman with a big heart who adopted him gave him a home full of love and caring.
Maria Margherita was an avid animal lover and have adopted several dogs and cats before finding Tommy in wasteland.
But Tommy and Maria’s relationship prove to be a special one as two went to church of St. Mary of the Assumption together every day. The priest allowed to Tommy inside the church with his owner and he just laid patiently at her feet until it was time to go back home.
Sadly, the partnership has come to an end when the 57=year-old Maria unexpectedly passes away and left Tommy behind.
“They arranged her memorial service in the same church where she often seen praying. Tommy followed her coffin into church and stayed during her funeral. None of the mourners had the heart to stop him joining them at the funeral service.”
Two months after the funeral, everyone was surprised to see Tommy going to church again everyday just like he used to do when Maria was still alive, he would quietly stay in every ritual.
The dog will go to church whenever he hears the church bells ringing to mark the beginning of the mass, probably reminding him of his master’s devotion or perhaps Tommy is hoping that she would be there.
The devoted pooch would just sit in front of the altar, facing the congregation.
Father Donato Panna said:
”He’s there every time I celebrate Mass and is very well behaved – he doesn’t make a sound, I’ve not heard one bark from him in all the time he has been coming in.
‘He used to come to Mass with Maria and he was obviously devoted to her – I let him stay inside as he was always so well behaved and none of the other parishioners ever complained to me.
‘He’s still coming to Mass even after Maria’s funeral, he waits patiently by the side of the altar and just sits there quietly. I didn’t have the heart to throw him out – I’ve just recently lost my own dog so I leave him there until Mass finishes and then I let him out.”
However, several months passed, Tommy’s condition started to decline and according to a vet, the dog’s age and the psychological impact of Maria’s passing took its toll on him.
Tommy’s life has come to an end and he is now happily united with his beloved owner in the afterlife.
